SAT-7 STARTS
FARSI TV BROADCASTS TO IRAN & AFGHANISTAN

  • NICOSIA, 5th September 2002 - SAT-7 will begin its regular broadcasts for Iran on Thursday 12th September 2002.  Church leaders in Iran admit that almost half their adherents have emigrated since the 1979 Islamic revolution, reducing the total number of Christians to about 160,000.  Many of these, including some in the priesthood, are desperately in need of the encouragement and support that such a television service can provide.  And, at the same time, the broadcasts will address the real interest in Christianity expressed by many outside the church. Most of the Christians in Iran belong to the Orthodox Armenian and Assyrian churches.  But there are also significant numbers of Catholics, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Assemblies of God and some Brethren fellowships. Satellite dishes are technically illegal in Iran but it is estimated that as many as 20 million people may already have access to satellite TV.  The number of dishes in Afghanistan (where Farsi is widely understood) is unknown, but sales are growing fast. The one-hour broadcasts will initially transmit at 12:30 (noon) and 20:00 hours Iran time, on Thursdays and Fridays (the Iranian weekend).  The service is also available to viewers in Europe, at 10:00 and 17:30 CET on the same days.  It is hoped to expand the broadcasts to a daily service over the next couple of years. The Farsi language programs will be broadcast on SAT-7's digital channel but under the separate channel logo of ICB (Iranian Christian Broadcasting).
    • Exact channel information: Eutelsat Hot Bird 3 at 13° East (digital service from 12.379 GHz, Vertical Polarity, 27500 symbols/sec, FEC 3/4) SAT-7 is a satellite TV service for the Christians of the Middle East and North Africa.
  • It is a partnership involving more than 30 agencies and churches that began in 1996, and today broadcasts a daily Arabic TV service to an estimated viewing audience in excess of 5 million people.
